Some of us will be genetically predisposed to sensitive skin, most commonly those who also suffer with eczema or other allergies including hayfever. Sensitive skin is almost always more delicate because it generally has a lower amount of pigment, a thin epidermis, and blood vessels close to the skin surface, hence the appearance of redness and reactions like stinging, pain or flushing.
Sensitised skin is different to sensitive skin in that it can be triggered at any age, regardless of your normal skin type. Sensitised skin is more commonly caused by an environmental aggressor such as pollution and temperature changes but can also be caused by smoking, alcohol, cosmetics, an allergic reaction or hormones.
Signs of sensitive skin can include
A thin skin texture with a translucent like appearance.
A feeling of tightness, which can indicate dehydration and lead to skin reactions from products.
Redness or blotchiness - this can be a sign of over-reactive capillaries or a tendency toward rosacea.
Flaking, peeling or cracking on the cheeks and forehead.
Flushing and itching, or a burning sensation, which can also be a sign of over-reactive capillaries.
Small, rash-like bumps or breakouts (not to be confused with acne breakouts).
